Isolation of equipment
When RS-232/V.24 units have to be electrically isolated from each other, e.g. in an industrial environment where there is a high risk of interference, an isolator is used. An isolator provides galvanic isolation and prevents electrical interference, transients and earth currents from propagating and damaging connected equipment. An isolator does not have a modem function and, therefore, does not allow you to increase the distance beyond the RS-232/V.24 recommendation of about 15 metres. In synchronous transmission, the isolator can also be used to generate the synchronization clock.
