  • 20 mA Current Loop

    The 20mA current loop or TTY is not an RS- or V. standard. Despite this 20 mA current loop has been used in industrial system for decades now and was a de facto standard long before the standards used today, like RS-232/V.24 and RS-422/485. Westermo current loop converters can be set to either active or passive on both transmitter and receiver. It is possible to transmit up to distances of 6 km at lower data rates using 20mA current loop.

  • Fiber Optic Modems

    Fiber optic modems are often used in data communication systems to bridge long distances at high data rates. Fiber optic systems are particularly immune to electromagnetic interference and therefore very suitable for harsh industrial environments. Westermo products can transmit data at up to 12 Mbit/s over distances up to 80 km depending on the fiber type.

  • Fieldbus / PROFIBUS DP

    The Westermo Fieldbus devices are industrial PROFIBUS DP modules. There are different types of slave modules and one Master module. PROFIBUS adapters that is able to transfer PROFIBUS DP I/O data via serial communication. I.e leased lines, dial up modems, Ethernet adapters, GSM modems or radio modems without any use of special drivers or special PLC bords. The FD-20, PROFIBUS DP Master module act the same way as the adapters on the serial side and act as a stand alone master on the PROFIBUS side. A combination with our Ethernet adapter gives the opportunity to connect PROFIBUS to Ethernet PROFIBUS DP converter to make a transparent connection for a different serial interfaces to a PROFIBUS DP network.
  • GSM/GPRS

    GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) offers a natural and easy platform for wireless automation, much more flexible and easier solution than for example traditional radio modems. The GSM-modem can be used to link PLC’s, data loggers, security and surveillance systems or for data acquisition. With the ability to call pre-set numbers or send/receive SMS-messages the GSM-modem is ideal for alarm monitoring and remote diagnostics for unmanned stations. The Westermo GSM-modem can communicate with other GSM-modems, traditional analogue modem and ISDN-adapters.

    Westermo LONWORKS TP/FT (twisted pair / free topology) products can be configured as bus, loop or star in one entire network.
    The Westermo product range for LONWORKS covers fiber optic repeaters and routers which allows high data rate over long distances. A router is equipped with a standard router core module, thus allowing configuration and installation with tools like LonBuilder and LonMaker. A router can be installed as repeater, configured router or learning router.
    A repeater is transparent and act as a TP/FT-10 physical layer repeater to extend distances and protect the network against electrical interference’s.
  • Multidrop Modems

    Westermo has multidrop modems both for private and for leased lines. Both type of modems can be connected to serial devices with RS-232 or RS-422/485 interfaces.
    The V.23 standard which is the only multidrop leased line standard allows speed up to 1200 bit/s on two or four wire. Multidrop applications on private lines can have speeds up to 19 200 bit/s but the distances depend on the line quality and the number of drop points on the line.
    Important for this kind of communication devices is that the units have good protection as the line interface is connected to long distance lines, exposed for all kind of external disturbances.
  • Protocol Converters

    Problems that sometimes occurs when connecting serial units is the use of different types of protocols with different parameters and speeds formats. There can also be problems with units requiring handshake signals, which the connected units does not support. These types of problems can be solved with Westermo protocol converters. The converters are available in both DIN and table top housing.
  • Routers

    In a network, a router is a device or, in some cases, software in a computer, that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its final destination.The router is connected to at least two networks and decides which way to send each information packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to. IP routers provide a connection between subnets. When a host wishes to send data to a host in another IP subnet the host sends the data to its gateway or router address which then knows how to forward that data packet to the correct network.
  • RS-232/V.24 Isolators

    The most common problems with an RS-232/V.24 interface is that it is unbalanced and very sensitive to noise and earth loop currents. Earth loops are caused when two pieces of equipment are connected to power sources with different earth potentials. A problem is caused when current travels to the wrong earth point via the signal ground on the serial connection. The Westermo isolators can solve these problems and are available in both DIN and table top housings.
  • RS-422/485 Converters and Repeaters

    The RS-422 and RS-485 interfaces are the most common standards used in modern industrial data communication systems. Most of the well-known fieldbuses like Profibus and Interbus use RS-485 as their electrical standard. RS-422 and RS-485 have the advantage that they can be used at very high data rates, for example Profibus can handle rates up to 12 Mbit/s. All Westermo RS-422/485 converters or repeaters can be used in systems that correspond to these standards. The repeaters can handle data rates up to 1.5 Mbit/s but the converters are limited by the RS-232/V.24 interface to a maximum data rate of 115.2 kbit/s The Westermo RS-422/485 product range can be used for 2- or 4-wire and both in point to point or in bus type systems.
  • Serial Ethernet Converters

    A Serial Ethernet Adapter might take many different forms and will be able to perform any of the functions below. It will not only provide remote connection to serial devices.
  • Short Haul Modems

    Westermo short haul modems are used on 4- or 2-wire private lines. The products in this group require a 4-wire line for full- or half-duplex communication. Another name for this type of device is line driver.

  • Switches

    A switch is a device used to construct Ethernet networks and control the data flow and bandwidth of the network. A switch stores incoming packets and then tests the packet for check sum errors, if an error is found the packet is discarded. After that a decision is made as to which port or ports the packet should be forwarded to.This decision is made based on tables of Media Access Control (MAC) addresses. All MAC tables are created and maintained automatically from the received packets.When the switch receives a packet on a port it stores the source MAC address in the MAC table that corresponds to that port. If a node is silent for a long time the MAC address will “age out” and be removed from the table. A switch can operate in full duplex mode, this ensures that an Ethernet controller will never see any collisions occurring when operated in such a manner.
    A switch can be either managed or unmanaged, an unmanaged switch can not be reconfigured using external software tools. A managed switch allows access to its functions to allow it to be reconfigured or monitored.This management can be inband- using protocols on the network or outband via a local management port or fault contacts.A managed switch often uses SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) for inband management. SNMP is the Internet standard protocol developed to manage nodes (servers, workstations, routers, switches and hubs etc.) on an IP network. SNMP enables network administrators to manage network performance, find and solve network problems, and plan for network growth.
  • Telephone Modems

    This product group consists of modems that can be connected to the public telephone network. The modems are approved in most European countries and in many countries in other parts of the world.
    Westermo modems are designed for industrial applications, which means that there are functions built in to them that are especially useful in industrial systems like for instance PLC connection mode and DIP switch settings. The Westermo products have a watchdog function and are galvanically isolated to give reliable communication in harsh environments. Some of the modems can also be used on 2- or 4-wire leased lines over very long distances. We also have modems that can be used for long distance multidrop applications.
  • Wireless Ethernet

    Industrial radio modems allow Ethernet and asynchronous RS-232 or RS-485 data signals to be transmitted up to 5 km without the need for wires.
    The Westermo radio modems are designed to very high standards to make them incredibly reliable. Modems are available for use in both the 869 Mhz and WiFi 2,4G Hz license free bands. Modems in the 900 Mhz band is availible for the US market.
    Their design allows them to be used in place of copper connections for serial data transfer, on a point to point or multidrop basis, ideal when cabling will be difficult.
